Call for applications: Postdoctoral fellow in the philosophy of perception

The Junior Professor Chair in Philosophy of Perception (PI: Joulia Smortchkova), hosted by the University Grenoble Alpes invites applications for a postdoctoral position in philosophy of perception, in conjunction with the “Mental Files: New Foundations” project (PI: François Recanati), which is hosted by the Collège de France, Paris. The position in Grenoble is one year, with a planned subsequent one-year contract in Paris at Collège de France. The objective of the position is to explore applications of the mental file framework in perception, and the philosophical issues they raise.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated research expertise related to the following topics:
• Perceptual first impressions of objects
• Object perception
• Perceptual modes of presentation
• Perspectival, egocentric, and allocentric representation
• Attention and recognition
• The relation between perception and cognition
Candidates must have a solid foundation in the philosophy of perception and knowledge of the mental file literature. Competence in cognitive science is an advantage.

This is an entry-level position, and it must be the candidate’s first postdoctoral position after their PhD. Successful candidates must have completed their PhD by the time of their appointment. Research will be conducted at the IPhiG (Institut de Philosophie de Grenoble), but regular missions to Paris and sustained collaboration with the team at Collège de France are to be expected.

The deadline for the application is May 2, 2025. Interviews will be held on-line May 12, 2025. The planned starting date is September 1, 2025.
