Brains was founded in 2005 by Gualtiero Piccinini, administered by John Schwenkler from late 2011 to mid 2020, and co-managed by Daniel Burnston and Nick Byrd since mid 2020. The associate editors have included Ann-Sophie Barwich, Majid D. Beni, Trey Boone, Robert Briscoe, Cameron Buckner, Daniel Burnston, Nick Byrd, Tony Cheng, Aaron Henry, Kristina Musholt, Sarah Robins, Katrina Sifferd, Zina Ward, and Pascale Willemsen.
