Abstract. Object files are representations that sustain reference to external objects and keep track of the properties of these objects. Object files are posited to explain the way our perceptual system leads us to behave in various circumstances, especially in experiments involving multiple object tracking, object-specific preview benefit and trans-saccadic memory. I argue that the only representations these behavioral studies presuppose are early cortical representations. In other words, we do not need to postulate a separate category of representation, namely, object files, because the explanatory work object files are supposed to do is done by early cortical representations.
