Clarifications [10/4/2011]: Several people asked me for more information about the joint research program to be pursued by the postdoc and me as well as the beginning of the postdoc.  Here is what I’m thinking:

1) The goal of the joint research is to produce co-authored publications on topics of mutual interest, which will depend in part on the postdoc’s expertise.  I’d like to work at least in part on (i) functions in biological systems and artifacts and (ii) how to integrate psychology and neuroscience (with emphasis on how to bridge mechanistic levels within a broadly computational and information-processing approach to cognition).  Other topics are possible too.

2) The postdoc need not have a Ph.D. in hand by the time s/he begins the postdoc.  She may complete the Ph.D. during the postdoc or even later if necessary.

3) Due to internal budgetary constraints, it would be better if the postdoc could start in January 2012.  The reason is that the sooner the postdoc starts, the more likely it is that the postdoc will be extended beyond the initial one year.  If it is not possible for the postdoc to start by January 2012, s/he should start no later than September 2012.
